Many older households have their laundry room located in the basement, but newer designs have moved it up to the first floor. This will reduce the physical work of moving large piles of clothes from one part of the home to another.
Try to paint your walls using bright colors to add personality, and use a hard surface for countertops like a granite or other stone. This will make the laundry room more modern and more inviting for guests, and will give the impression that this room is not unlike other parts of the house.
Add larger capacity cabinets to increase storage space. This will get the necessary items like detergent, static cling sheets, hangers, etc. out of the way. These items tend to clutter up the room and take away from the overall theme of the room.
When you pickout your appliances, go with the more modern designs. These come in a wide variety of colors and are designed to project an inviting aura for all your visitors. In addition to these advantages, they are also higher capacity and more energy efficient. This will save you money on your utility bills and allow you to quickly make back the extra money you spent on them. Should you not want to purchase newer models, you can always tuck away your older ones behind folding doors.
The last cosmetic thing you can consider when remodeling the room is to upgrade your floor to a colorful tile or hardwood floor. Whatever flooring you use in the adjoining room should be used here as well, so the design flows from one space to the other. People will not even realize they are in the laundry room.
If noise is a concern, you can add extra insulation or sound proofing around the walls. This will dampen any excess sounds that would otherwise drift into the kitchen or living rooms. This is especially helpful during family time such as dinner or movie nite.
Obviously there are many things to think about when changing the look of your laundry room. Make sure you are happy with the direction you are going before starting the project, so that you don't find yourself redoing the work in a couple of years. This was actually very helpful. I'm remodeling a house that has the laundry room that you can only get to by going through the master which feels a little awkward. But I figured, as long as it doesn't look like a utility room, it could still work. I'm going to have it look more like an extension of the bedroom, adding crowning, baseboards, color on the wall and storage. This article confirms that I'm on the right track.
